Australian Music Magazine Index

The aim of the AMMI is to index every Australian music magazine. This includes current music papers such as Blunt, Rolling Stone, Rhythms; the three major magazines which are no longer being published (Juke, RAM, Go Set), every "street" music paper (including X-Press, Drum Media, Revolver, Time Off, Rave, Beat, In*Press, Forte, Buzz, BMA, dB, Rip It Up) as well as other short-lived papers such as Roadrunner, Juice, From the Vault and Concrete Press. There is scope to index many others.

Background and Introduction to the Index

I am attempting to index every Australian music paper to enable researchers, writers and interested people locate articles about artists, both Australian and overseas.

I have decided to indicate the appearance of the following categories:

  • Major / Feature article
  • Minor article
  • Live review
  • Album review
  • EP/12” review
  • Single review

There is also the provision for indexing general articles, book reviews, film reviews but this is not the emphasis of the index.

To save time, and typing, I have not indicated titles of articles, nor bothered to list titles of singles, and albums until early 2007 when I added this feature to make the index more marketable and user friendly. My assumption was that the date of publication would be a guide to the respective release.

Notes for Index of Magazines:

  • "The", "a" etc are ommitted from band names.
  • An "*" after the title of the magazine, means the page is incomplete eg missing bits!
  • If an artist has two articles on the same page the more significant is indicated; if on different pages in the same edition, two separate entries.
  • Note the Rolling Stone magazine in the list is the Australian edition - it is published monthly and chooses which articles to republish from its American source, plus a few articles about Australian artists.
  • lp = full length album, ep = either 12" single or cdep, si = 7" single or cds; dvd, fr = film review; br = book review
  • Key words = main topic/ subjects of general article about the music industry.
  • Authors are included to distinguish Australian writers from international and syndicated sources.
  • A major article is of at least one full page length, minor article part page.
  • Entries in "gossip" columns not indexed.
  • Country of origin: I have used the first three letters in most instances and generally have followed the nomenclature used by the Olympics. There are exceptions, such as the USA being just US, Great Britain = UK and all the West Indies colonies being entered under WI, eg. Jamaica, Trinidad etc = WI; Scotland, Wales and England = UK; Ireland and Northern Ireland = IRE.
Artists whose origin I do not know have been left blank, although there would be an 80% chance they would be from the USA!, and if I am not sure the letters are in lower case followed by a question mark.

Want To Help?

MediaScan is seeking initially volunteers to index their local papers or street music press, particularly in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Cairns.

Initially MediaScan can offer free subscriptions to those people who are able to assist.

If the index gains momentum, MediaScan may be in a position to pay people to index a greater number of publications.
